Where Wolf Vostell used his projector on the move to inscribe the trauma of German social ills onto the fabric of the city, in 1970s UK Nicky Hamlyn deployed a number of projectors to build a shifting field of temporal abstractions - back in the gallery space. In his 4 X LOOPS (1974) Hamlyn transformed the function of the projector from the single, determinant point of view to one of many in a sophisticated system of image making that involved technical, pictorial and performative elements, in which chance also played a part.
